West Des Moines, IA (Vocus) September 17, 2010

William Penn University’s College for Working Adults (CWA) honors military families this month with fee waivers and a series of special events that include a Family Fun Day and Resource Fair, and a special presentation by Four Star General Tommy Franks.

The Family Fun Day and Resource Fair will take place Saturday, Sept. 18 on William Penn’s West Des Moines campus (6000 Westown Parkway, West Des Moines, Iowa). American Equity and the Veterans of Foreign Affairs Ladies Auxiliary are providing a hearty lunch, with the help of a big grill from the American Legion. Chick-fil-A also will be there, along with Famous Dave’s mascot, their famous cornbread muffins and delicious chocolate from Chocolate Storybook. Numerous games and activities include a bounce house for the children sponsored by Knapp Properties and a Chick-fil-A cow toss game with the Chick-fil-A mascot. Displays include an H3 Army Hummer and cars from the Classic Car Club and Stew Hanson’s Dodge Dealership. Area businesses are joining in the fun with door prizes and giveaways: NASCAR tickets from Iowa Speedway, massage certificates, a free one-room stay at the Hilton Garden Inn, gift baskets and more.

“This will be a lot of fun for families and a golden opportunity for military personnel to enroll in a degree program that will take their careers to a new level,” said Molly Moeller, CWA’s Director of Enrollment. “We look forward to welcoming them on campus.”

William Penn is Military Friendly

Resources and career opportunities for military and their families will be an important part of the fair. Veterans Affairs reps will be on-site to discuss benefits and employers will be showcasing job openings. “Active military, veterans and spouses are already eligible for application fee waivers when they enroll at William Penn,” said Moeller. “For the month of September, we are also adding fee waivers for their dependents and individuals in law enforcement, corrections, and fire departments.”

Among all the “don’t miss” opportunities is the chance to get more information about Gen. Franks’ presentation at William Penn on Wednesday, Sept. 29. Gen. Franks was the Commander in Chief of the U.S. Central Command and the U.S. commander of the coalition military operations in the war against Iraq. Franks led the post-9/11 attack against the Taliban in Afghanistan, America’s 2003 invasion of Iraq and the overthrow of former Iraqi President Saddam Hussein. Since his retirement he has served on the William Penn Board of Trustees and taken a keen interest in the university’s leadership program, encouraging study and debate on the traits of leadership.

Sponsors of the Family Fun Day and Resource Fair include William Penn University, American Equity, Knapp Properties, Pepsi, Costco, Liberty Bank, Famous Daves, Chick-fil-A and Stew Hansen Dodge Dealership.

Question by ebreger2001: How much USD should it cost to transfer 4 adults from the Barcelona Int’l Airport to a downtown hotel?
I am being quoted USD$ 186.00 one way which seems wildly expensive. A cab cannot cost this much can it?

Best answer:

Answer by Iain S
Well the bus to the city centre costs $ 5 each.
A taxi will cost more but, depending on the time (rush hour) and where your hotel is, will not cost more than $ 40, and should be a lot less.
Remember that the taxis do not accept US$ only Euros..

Money Saving Tips

Money Saving Tips

People are always trying to save money, especially with today’s economy. No matter what your reason for saving, through this e-book, you will discover ways never considered.

The price of everything has gone up, requiring people to be more conscientious about money. The problem is that by the time the mortgage, car, utilities, and credit cards are paid, there is little money to put aside. Saving money is not that hard, just a matter of learning all the different options and being creative.

In addition to the obvious of putting money into a retirement fund or savings account, there are hundreds of ways to save money. Although some ways of saving may not seem like much, once you add them up at the end of the year, you will see how substantial the savings really are. Keep in mind that saving is more than a single lump sum of money put aside. Saving is something found in your everyday life by the way you live and the choices you make.

Rome was not built in a day and neither will your bank account be. Each penny saved is one more penny than before. If you have the ability to save big, that is great. However, most people are not in that position, which is why this e-book will show you how little savings can add up quickly.

Be encouraged that it is never too late to start saving, regardless of your age. Set your mind that now is the time to start building your future.

1. Holiday Gift Giving

This tip is especially helpful for large families. Although it is fun buying for and receiving from everyone, it can be very expensive. Make an agreement with your family that you will continue to buy for the children but that the adults will go with a name exchange. This way the children are not disappointed and you can spend a little more on one or two people rather than spreading your money thin. For the members that you did not pick to exchange with, bake a loaf of their favorite homemade bread or cookies.

2. Clearance

Always head straight for the clearance rack where you can find amazing bargains. Sometimes you may have to dig a little to find the right item but the savings will be well-worth your time. Most clearance racks offer variety, current trends, and great value. For example, Bed, Bath & Beyond has a clearance section where you can find all kinds of wonderful household items for a fraction of the original cost.

3. Thrift / Surplus Stores

Unfortunately, thrift and surplus stores have been given a bad rap. Many of these stores are filled with hundreds of top quality items. Name brand merchandise is easy to find but just like clearance racks, it takes some time to find. Find a thrift or surplus store close to where you live and then plan spending some time to find those outstanding bargains. One woman in Kansas City, Missouri located such a store about 20 minutes from her home. After shopping through every isle over the period of two hours, she walked out of the store with eight huge garbage bags filled to the brim with designer clothes for her and her children, many with the original tags still attached. She even found a couple of Liz Claiborne suits for herself at .99 each and a Dooney & Burke purse normally valued at 5 for .95. Her children had an entire season of school clothes and best of all, she paid less than 0.

4. Wrapping Paper and Bows

Create your own wrapping paper, which is not only unique, but also fun. Use plain brown grocery bags and craft-like paints to make your design. After wrapping the gift, let your creative juices flow. For example, using black and yellow craft paint, create a miniature road. Then dipping toy truck tires into red paint roll them along the paper making tire tracks. You can then draw free hand a stop sign, yield sign, or stop light. Next, using a hot glue gun, glue a couple of the miniature trucks to the paper. This is perfect for a young boy. He will be just as thrilled with the wrapping as the actual gift. For a girl, you can simply create miniature bows from existing fabric or lace and glue them on brown paper then free hand draw colorful flowers. Just use your creativity and look around for items you already have on hand to use.

5. Reuse

When you shop, look for items that can be reused. Rechargeable batteries are a perfect example. Even though the initial purchase may be more than non-rechargeable batteries, there is a definite savings over a long period. Another option would be to purchase a nice artificial Christmas tree. Many of the current artificial trees look amazingly real and with the right lights and ornaments, you can change the look from year to year.

Q&A: Is there any way I can use a recording of a mother chicken to play to my pipping chicks?

Question by ucnthveit: Is there any way I can use a recording of a mother chicken to play to my pipping chicks?
When they start hatching out of the shell, is there any way I can record the sound of a mother chicken peeping to babies coming out, so they don’t feel alone? Our friend (who has a lot more experience with this than I do) says they sometimes give up when they are pipping because they can’t hear their mother.

Best answer:

Answer by Clucky
If the chicks see you as the first moving thing they will think they’re your mother. Instead of playing a recording, I would try and make the sound yourself. I had one group of chickens I did that to and they followed me around when I let them lose, even as adults.

Hope this helps!

P.s: If you can’t make a clucking sound. Then make a sound you’ll always make around them.

A Short History of Piggy Banks

A Short History of Piggy Banks

After selling piggy banks for more than a year it suddenly dawned on me – why are they called piggy banks? What does a pig have to do with saving money? A pig would be the last animal you’d associate with saving! Why not bunny banks or doggy banks and for that matter, why an animal at all?! Additionally, piggy bank sounds like it was intended as a child’s item as how many adults would use a piggy bank for collecting change?

To satisfy my curiosity I did some piggy bank research and have learned some interesting things and thought I would share them with you.

As you well know, many, particularly ceramic, piggy banks do not have an opening to remove the money. Now why is that? The theory goes that this is to serve as a lesson in finances for children. The piggy bank enables a child to save his money but forces him to justify its spending as in order to access the money he needs to break his piggy bank. This lesson seems to have been forgotten by many adults! Maybe we should keep a piggy bank in our front foyer and deposit our loose change as we come home each day! I digress…

The question still remains, why is it called a piggy bank and why is it in the shape of a pig?

One theory is that just as it was common to purchase a piglet and feed it with scraps until it was finally ready for slaughter, so too we feed our piggy bank with small change (“scraps”) until it is full and then break it to reap the rewards of our investment. According to this, the piggy bank would also be appropriate for adults.

A more popular theory is that, in fact, the original piggy bank had absolutely nothing to do with a pig! In the Middle Ages, when metal was expensive, an inexpensive, orange colored clay, called pygg, was the common media for making pots and jars, and was referred to as a pygg jar, for example. One of these jars was often used to hold coins. Eventually, the pygg jar or pygg bank used for coins, surely accidentally, became known as a pig bank or piggy bank! The general consensus is that this evolution transpired a few hundred years ago in England when crafters were hired to make pygg banks and not being familiar with pygg they made pig shaped banks.

The oldest recorded piggy bank in the shape of a pig is claimed to be 1500 years old from Indonesia. If this is so, it precedes the pygg theory by around 1000 years! Perhaps there was some connection between the pig and saving money in that culture but it seems to have not influenced Western culture, where the modern piggy bank only evolved from pygg clay just a few hundred years ago.

Understandably, the piggy bank is not popular in all cultures. The pig is considered an impure animal according to the Old Testament and hence is not owned, eaten nor benefited by Jews. Similarly, Islam forbids the eating of pork due to being impure. Hence, one would not expect to find too many piggy banks in Muslim countries and in homes of those of the Jewish and Muslim faiths.

The modern piggy bank, whether made from ceramics, plastic, beads or metal, has been a very popular collector’s item and gift for children due to its appealing and humorous appearance. In addition to the smile or chuckle we experience each time we drop some change into our piggy bank let us be reminded by the lesson it teaches us!

By the way, the famous phrase, “break the bank”, has nothing to do with the piggy bank!

Investment Clubs for Kids: Investing Isn’t Just for Grown-ups

Investment Clubs for Kids: Investing Isn’t Just for Grown-ups

Investment clubs can be a fantastic opportunity for kids to learn about investing. As they learn about investments they will develop a better understanding of money.

How to get started

The first step is to find a kid-friendly investment club. Browse investment club websites to determine if there are special sections devoted to teaching children or teens about investing. Speak with your neighbors, friends and colleagues to find out if they know of any investment clubs for kids. If you can’t find a suitable club you can start your own. Consider getting together with other parents to start an investment club for kids.

Choosing a portfolio

One of the hardest things with any investment club is deciding on the specific investments to make. Children have less money to work with than adults so it is important to stick to stocks that are well within their budget. What is most fun for kids is to choose stocks from companies they are familiar with. Think about clothing, food, computer, game software or other companies they use products from.

Learning about stocks

Before deciding on what stocks to invest, teach your kids to learn more about the companies they are considering. Children can learn more about a company from its website, by reading its annual report or by looking at its daily stock reports and trends.

Finding money to invest in stocks

Children can start by saving their allowance to invest in stocks. Open a savings account at a local bank so they can easily make periodic deposits. Teach children to save part of the money they receive as birthday or Christmas gifts. Older children can be paid extra for completing additional chores around the house. When children are old enough to work outside the home encourage them to take on a part-time job. Parents can help children by setting up a matching program where parents will match the investment amount the child has.

Keeping track of investments

Choose an investment club that offers interactive charts and reports. This will allow you and your child to record and keep track of their investments. Set aside a certain day of the week to spend an hour looking at how the stocks are doing. Make sure to stay on top of the investments and sell stocks when necessary. Follow the market trends using the newspaper or Internet to determine how you think the chosen stocks will perform. Teach children to make a connection between current events and stock trends.

Investing just isn’t for grown-ups only. Even young children can learn about investing through investment clubs for kids. Learn more about joining and starting an investment club at www.aboutinvestmentclub.com/home
